Will RFID ever rule the world?

RFID Rule the World

RFID or Radio Frequency Identification provides reliable track and trace real time data, regarding inventory and product locations and as the key technology for smart card access control systems. The technology comprises of two main components, the RFID tags and readers and at its core it enables wireless communication between a reader and a RFID tag.

Why have RFID tags become so essential today?

RFID has provided modern businesses with a reliable track and trace method even in tough environments. It has allowed businesses to receive real time data regarding inventory and product locations, which has made it equally easy to track a large asset inventory, batches and of course individual products. RFID tags unlike barcodes, do not require line of sight scanning and as said can be read in bulk.

Smart access control

RFID technology has also revolutionised our access systems, providing secure and fast access control. Smart cards today essentially act like single-purpose computers with built-in processors. They have a two-way communication with the card readers which has enabled more advanced encryption.

Affordable

Despite all the benefits it provides RFID tags remain cheap enough to be incorporated into almost any everyday items like IDs, credit cards and badges. They are the reason that so many processes are automated today, such as providing access to buildings, gain services, events, retail payments and even for passport controls. It has helped save time and money.

Most RFID systems are cost-effective and quite quickly cover the investment cost for simpler systems while taking a little longer in more specific or complex systems.

Error free

Thanks to RFID technology numerous industries have been able to optimise production with better tracking control processes. This has led to increased revenues and customer satisfaction. The error-free nature of RFID has made it invaluable in so many areas from inventory documentation to supporting regulatory compliance.

Better quality of life

Today, we almost take for granted the benefits RFID has provided our modern lives and yet in so many everyday occurrences we depend on the technology to smoothen processes for us. It has improved the way inspections are carried out enhancing safety procedures, reporting issues and compliance with regulatory bodies. Whether RFID rules the world or not, it is definitely here to stay, enhancing our quality of life, for which we should all be grateful.
